A Good Time Was Had...

...I believe, by all though I didn't take a full survey. The A4C opening at Electric Earth had a decent turnout, and excellent performances by the comedians and musicians. There was a very companionable vibe in the air as people moved about the room over the course of the night.

Artists for Choice art exhibit reception night!

Artists for Choice art exhibit
June 12 – July 11 (reception night June 16)
Electric Earth Café
546 W. Washington Ave
Madison, WI

We’re having our opening night reception on Friday, June 16, beginning at 7pm. If you happen to be in the area, please come! There’ll be swanky art on the walls, and even niftier performances, including music and comedians. Hope to see you there!

Many thanks to Amandagaze for doing the write-up and posting at The Isthmus!

Hanging out at Electric Earth

Well, the show has now been hung at Electric Earth on West Wash. By the time I had to leave, everything was progressing nicely. There were no squabbles about space, as everyone seemed to find just the right spot to put their pieces. I needed to be elsewhere before all of the work was up, so I am certainly looking forward to seeing how everything looks together when I hit the opening on Friday.

I'm really glad that we have been able to maintain momentum from last year, and I am hoping that we can reach out to new people this year. Having the show in an all-ages space should help.

HEADS UP: Artists For Choice art show set for June!

All right, people, now is the time to get in gear because on June 11, we are hanging up artwork as Artists For Choice at Electric Earth!

Cory (who's in charge of artwork at EE) will confirm final details with me later today. What's already confirmed is that we can show our art at the West Washington Electric Earth for an entire month in the month of June. There is another artist set for July, so we can't prolong that, but she says that if we'd like, at the end of our month (around July 11) we can move our artwork from their West Washington cafe to their North Randall Electric Earth cafe for a second month. I leave it up to you what you want to decide; we can discuss more of this at the next meeting (more on that later).

In the meantime, these are the general guidelines, as had been discussed and confirmed at the last Artists meeting:

  • All participating artists must submit a list in writing of what they plan to show, as well as a $5 sign-up fee/donation. The $5 will be used to cover present and future group costs, such as publicity flyers and the like. Please note that it is only $5 per participating artist, not per art-piece, so rest easy; you donate the same no matter how many or how little pieces you have. Volunteers are not required to pay the sign-up fee, though they're more than welcome to donate and support if they wish.

  • This list and donation is due June 7 if you wish to take part. I volunteered to be the unofficial treasurer** at the last meeting, so you can either mail them to me or arrange to meet with me to pass them on to me by that date. You can also attend our next Artists meeting and pass them on then (we should quickly arrange to have that meeting soon -- more on that later). The list must contain:
    • Name of Artist
    • Name of Artwork
    • Medium (eg. ink, digital, painting, 3D sculpture, performance art)
    • Size/dimensions of artwork, if applicable (10"x5", etc)
    • Contact e-mail & phone no.

  • The list represents your written confirmation of what you plan to show. It will also give the rest of us an idea of how many pieces we'll have and how much space we can allocate. For instance, a bunch of smaller artwork takes up the same space as a single large piece. We will seek balance, but if necessary we may have to limit the artwork on your list for space purposes, depending on its size. We will inform you about this before the hanging date.

  • The hanging date is tentatively June 11 (unless Cory calls back with a different date). There will be a specific window of time for you to drop off your artwork. All approved participating artists must drop off their art during this time (eg. 10am-2pm, or 2pm-5pm, to be determined once I confirm with Cory). The artwork must arrive ready to hang, i.e. already be set with hanging wires, etc. More on those details next time. We*** will hang it for you, or if it is 3D art, will place it on display for you. But it is your responsibility to have your piece(s) at the cafe at the specified time ready for display.

  • You must provide placards for your own artwork. You know the type: it will state things like your name, name of the artwork, medium, whether it's for sale, and how much. It must come either attached wih your artwork (eg. some artists have it as part of the frame) or be supplied with your artwork when you drop it off (in a way that it won't get misplaced,
please). We will mount it for you, if applicable, though you should ensure that it be able to adhere to the wall.

Once we're all set, we can do a quick blitz of publicity and promos.

We should have another Artists meeting the first week of June, to prepare for the art show. Set a time and date, people. Preferably before the 7th or 8th.

If you have any questions, speak up! Katharine, if I'm forgetting anything that was covered in the last meeting, let us know?

** Since I'm voluntary treasurer, any expenses you incur on behalf of the group can be reimbursed, so long as you provide me with a receipt. Photocopies of flyers, etc. Said expenses should preferably be approved by the group beforehand, of course; I can't quite see us being able to reimburse the purchase of a Lexus at this point in time.

*** By "we" I'm referring to some of the artists and volunteers, and maybe the cafe if they can help. Katharine, me, Sara, and Jackie have been doing a lot of helping out and organizing so far. If you would like to help out, please let us know! We welcome it.

Gearing up

We've been in the process of getting ready for the next steps as an organization. Last summer's events went very well, and we want to move forward as a group. The organizational process has been slow yet steady.

Currently we have been working on finding a venue or venues for an event in June, as well as reaching out to newer members. We have been on the lookout for those who are interested in taking part in the organizing and those who are want to participate as artists--or both! We hope to have a group made up of pro-choice artists from every field and media: painters, poets, filmmakers, musicians, designers, photographers, sculptors, printers...you name it, we probably want it. Ideally, we will also have a nice mix of ages, races, genders, and backgrounds.

Some of the ideas that have been bounced around are to have another event (or series of events) like we did last year, with visual art and performances together in one space, though perhaps a space that would be more accessable to all-ages crowds. It has also been suggested to have the visual arts in one venue and the performaces in another if we can't find one space for both. Another idea that has been floated for the future is to hold a Fashion-for-Choice type fashion show. Really, the possibilities for what we could do in the future are pretty vast, and mostly depend on what kinds of people we can get involved.

If you are interested, the sign-up for the egroup is on the right sidebar of this page, and is quick, easy and painless.

Something Old for Something New

No, it's not a wedding, but it is the brand-new weblog of Artist for Choice. I thought I'd start things off with a re-post of an event that has already passed us by. The three month extravaganza at Cafe Montmartre was a great success. So, here's a bit of nostalgia for you. Let the screen go wavy for a minute as you are transported back in time to the distant era that was July 2005:

<insert Wayne's Worldesque hand waving and sound effects>
